Story

Sujatha are Raghu are kids. Sujatha is the sister-in-law (maradalu) of Raghu. They always fight with each other. The parents of Sujatha and Raghu decide that they should be married off to each other when they grow up. Father of Sujatha shifts his house to city to look after his business. Sujatha and Raghu vow not to see each other again after a bitter argument. All this happened when they are hardly 7-8 years of age. Raghu (Gopi Chand) grows up and turns out to be a dangerous brat.

Sujatha (Sada) grows up. She joins a college. She has to travel to her college through a train. There she meets another student Venkat (Nitin), who is studying in the same class. Venkat is the son of a poor widower. He does all odd jobs to earn money for his living while studying. Sujatha and Venkat fall in love. When Sujatha parents come to know about it, they put a stop to Sujatha studies and arrange her engagement with Raghu, who is her brother-in-law (bava). Raghu comes to know about her relationship with Venkat. Still, he does not mind, as she is a pretty beautiful girl.

They arrange marriage in 10 days. Meanwhile, Venkat terrorizes Raghu by writings on walls of Raghu's place with blood that he would foil their marriage and take away the bride with him. At the time of marriage muhurat, Venkat takes away Sujatha along with him. The entire gang of Raghu and his buddies are after the run-away-couple. The rest of the story deals with how Raghu and Sujatha emerge as winners.

Artists:

Gopi Chand: Gopi Chand, who acted as villain in this film gave a splendid performance with his controlled emotion. Teja has done a terrific characterization to this role.

Nitin: Nitin suited the role of Venkat to the T. He is very smart with his boyish looks. At the same time, he expressed the tenderness and innocence through his emotions.

Sada: She is the find of the film. She is simply amazing. Again 50% of the credit should go to Teja for his characterization of heroine role. She is lovely with her simple attire of 'voni and langa'. There is lot of poetic sense (bhavukatha) to her characterization. Her 'povayya' mannerism worked out well for the film. She completely justified the role of innocent ladylove in the first half and inspirational lady in the second half.

Shakeela: The male fantasy of Malayalam - Shakeela - acted in an insignificant role of 'Bala Saraswati', a lecturer cum physical training teacher in this film. She has two classroom scenes and one physical training scene in this film.

Technical Departments:

Story - Screenplay - direction: Story of the film is routine. Direction and taking of Teja is fabulous. But, it's the screenplay that played fowl in the film. The film is not compact. It has got lots of gaps and loose ends, which makes viewer lose interest on the proceedings of the film. He has shown his finesse in developing and establishing them well. All the characters in the film make an impact. There are a couple of scenes in the second half that really excites the audience. The way Teja reflected the feelings of the lyrics in canning the songs is very impressive.

Dialogues: Dialogues of this film are soft except for a dialogue for Shakeela where she threatens a student by mouthing 'Pisikeshtaa!' (pun intended?) There are two powerful dialogues in the second half (one each by the mother of hero and the heroine). He tried using pun dialogues to maximum effect in a couple of scenes. But, the over all impact is missing.

Music: RP Patnaik's music is good. All the songs in film are situational and they are stitched into the movie so well that after watching the film you would realize if all songs that are presented in audio album are there in the film or not. Jayam music pales out in comparison to the music of Nuvvu Nenu. All the best songs in the film come in the first half in the form of 'Sabbasi', 'Raanu Raanu' and 'Priyatama' (in which teja successfully adapted the 'Mission Impossible' rope technique).

Photography: Sameer Reddy's photographic work is extraordinary. Being a cameraman himself Teja made best use of Sameer's talent.

Analysis: First half of the film would be liked by class people as the style of narration is very poetic. Second half would be liked by masses compared to first half as it has got good action scenes. Over all, it's an average film. Main draw back is the loose screenplay. The second draw back of the film is slow narration. A film would workout well if the director gets the audiences in his grip while narrating a story, be it a class film or a mass film. This film started off on a placid style and the director got grip on audience by the time of interval. But in the second half, he failed to maintain that grip. We have to wait and see how the youth responds to this Jayam.

Story

Jalsa Sanjay Sahu (Pawan Kalyan) is a happy-go-lucky type youth. Bhagyamati (Ileana) falls in love with him and Sanjay accepts her proposal after waiting for a while. Meanwhile, the men of Damodara Reddy (Mukesh Rishi) -a factionist operating from a jail - keep hunting for Sanjay Sahu. The rest of the story is all about why Damodar Reddy is after Sanjay and how Sanjay reacts to it.

Artists Performance

Jalsa Pawan Kalyan: Pavan Kalyan is extremely energetic as Sanjay Sahu. He did fresh dialogue modulation to create good humor. Everybody had a doubt about Pawan Kalyan performing to the Trivikram's punches and I must say that Pawan Kalyan excelled in getting the Trivikram dialogues right. He did not mind uttering satire on his 'pulla kallu'. He also did fights really well. Pawan Kalyan is looking dashing in Che Guevera get-up during his naxalite days.

Mahesh Babu: Mahesh Babu should be commended for giving voiceover to the narration of the film. It is a very good gesture by Mahesh Babu and this kind of culture augurs well for the Telugu film industry. Mahesh Babu did it in his usual style with an undercurrent wit.

JalsaHeroines: Ileana did the role of confused and dumb girl. She is alright. It is a passive role for such a vivacious actress like Ileana. Parvati Melton is sexy to the extent that she dominated Ileana in all the scenes where they were together. Kamalinee Mukherjee did a cameo and she is good. Actor Sivaji did a small role.

Others: Brahmanandam will have you in splits again in the second half of this film for some time. Mukesh Rishi is very good as a villain with a different get-up. Prakash Raj is ok as the father of the heroine. Sunil is nice. Ali and Dharmavarapu are adequate.

Technical Departments:

JalsaStory - screenplay - direction: The basic storyline of the film is wafer-thin. It is a love story of a reformed naxalite who is forced to confront a bad man. Trivikram excelled in dialogue department and penned many episodes catering to comedy segment. But as a script writer, he failed to do justice to the texture of the film. The film is pretty neat in terms of the comedy department. But he could not fix the narrative into any one particular genre. The screenplay should have been better. The director who made hero reveal about his downtrodden past and social commitment through the dialogues before interval could not match it with the characterization of hero in the second half. Trivikram did very good in technical aspects in terms of sets, camera angle etc.

The following scenes are pretty impressive:

1. Pawan Kalyan antics while meeting Prakash Raj with proposal for twice.
2. Pawan Kalyan splitting milk with Brahmanandam
3. Pawan Kalyan giving 10 rupees note to Brahmanandam. (best comedy thread in the entire film)

The following scenes seem to have got inspired by some other films

1. Mukesh Rishi calling off hero assassination at the last minute (Bill calling Elle Driver back when she is about to inject poison in the body of Uma Thurman)
2. Pawan Kalyan – Prakash Raj jungle episode (Noman's land and Kabul Express)
3. Sivaji's food allergy (Hitch film)

JalsaOther departments: Dialogues are superb. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is very good. Background score is also nice. All the songs are picturized in an attractive manner. However, Jennifer Lopez song appears to have been inserted just for the sake of Parvati Melton. Jalsa title song is placed during the climax of the film instead of the beginning. Cinematography is very good. Editing is cool. Fights are composed well. Production values of the film are extravagant.


JalsaAnalysis: First half of the film is packed with nice entertainment though there is no story. The second half should have been better. The plus points of the film are Pawan Kalyan, hilarious dialogues and rich technical values. The negative points are screenplay, naxalite element and excessive runtime. There is no justification to the title 'Jalsa'. On a whole, you may consider watching Jalsa for the comedy episodes in the film.

Story

Jai (Navadeep) is the only son of a globetrotting businesswoman and widow (Ayesha Julka). Farah (Santoshi) is the daughter of a café owner in Old City. Jai and Farah fall in love. Jai's mother goes to Pakistan for a business deal and clinches an offer of conducting boxing match between India and Pakistan in Hyderabad. She gives the responsibility of managing that event to Jai. After winning the competition, the Pakistani boxer passes derogatory remarks on India and Indians. Jai protests those comments and warns the Pakistani that he would fight with him in the next series of matches and win them to prove the greatness of India.

Meanwhile, father of Farah starts giving boxing lessons to Jai. The Pakistani officials and Lashkar-e-Toiba's chief monitor the progress of Jai with their informers in India. They send goons and stab the father of Farah. They also hunt for Jai and damage his right fist and ribcage, so that he would become unfit to fight the boxing match. The doctor tells Jai that he should be bed-ridden for at least 6 months. And the match is just 20 days away. The rest of the story is all about how Jai participates in the match and win it.

Artists Performance

Navadeep looks cute and he is perfect for the role of Jai. His dialogue delivery is immaculate (somebody might have dubbed his voice). His teen charm and innocent eyes would make girls fall for him. Heroine Santoshi is not a good-looking girl, but she is a very good performer. The characterization of heroine in this film is very good. Her dialogue - 'Naa Full Support neeke' is good. The guy who did the role of Sunil Shetty is impressive and he can join the gang of comedians if he proves himself further in other films. Tanikella Bharani is terrific as the father of heroine. Venu Madhav provided some comedy in first half. Duvvasi Mohan is good as usual. Abhinaya Sri did a vamp role of a cigar-smoking college maid. Ayesha Julka is beautiful wearing business suits all the time.

Technical Departments:

Story: Story of the film has the shades of 'Nuvvu Nenu' in the first half and 'Bhadrachalam' (Srihari's film) in the second half. The first half deals with love angle between the lead pair. Second half deals with patriotic angle between hero and Pakistani boxer.

Screenplay - direction: Screenplay of the film is neat in the initial hour of the film. The characters are established very well. Hero's longing for love of his mother is shown in a touching way. But he tried to exploit the patriotism by inserting scenes forcibly in the second half. The love track between the lead pair is good. But the patriotic track between India and Pakistan is half-cooked. There are impressive scenes like heroine brother agreeing to coach hero towards climax. However, these following points sound quite illogical:

1. The Pakistanis would be speaking in Telugu. They speak more Telugu than the Telugu spoke by heroine's family staying in Hyderabad.

2. Ayesh Julka (MD of Zingaro Non-alchoholic Bewerages Company) goes to Pakistan and fixes up a deal with people out there for a Boxing match. There is a respective Sports Authority in each country, which deals with organizing matches and championships. Then they invite for sponsors. Here, the sponsoring company decides who would play with whom and SAI (Sports Authority of India) conducts the match. Ayesha also decides who would be the match referee (Tanikella Bharani - a café owner - does the referee job for the match).

3. Chief of Lakshkar-e-Toiba and other Pakistani top brass people would be monitoring daily progress of hero through their informers as if they do not have any other work to do.

4. Ayesha goes missing in the second half of the film.

5. TV9 relays the boxing matches live and people in Pakistan would be viewing them.

Other departments: Songs by Anup are OK. Enni Aasalo and Desam Manare songs are good. Background music is impressive. Dialogues by MVS Haranadha Rao has more of Teja flavor. Lots of dialogues are written to arouse the patriotism in the hearts of the audience. Photography by newcomer Ravi Varma is excellent. Editing by Shankar is OK. Fights by Ram-Lakshman are good outside the ring (boxing ring). The boxing episodes are not conceived well. Choreography by Shankar is fair.

Analysis: First half of the film deals with teen love story between rags and riches. The interval point alters the orientation of the film. Second half is dealt with action episodes and the angle of patriotism. First half of the film is terribly slow. Second half is comparatively faster. Instead of concentrating more on what he is good at, director Teja has chosen to elaborate and exploit the patriotism aspect. He failed in getting emotions right through patriotic episodes. Teja's strength is making teen-love stories and succeeded fully whenever he did it (Chitram, Nuvvu-Nenu and Jayam). He failed whenever he deviated from teen-love stories and handled different subjects (Family Circus - family and Nijam - corruption). This film deals with both love (first half) and patriotism (second half). We have to wait and see what the Box Office has store in store for 'Jai'.

Story

Satyanarayana Murthy (Chiranjeevi) is a good hearted man in Amalapuram. The sudden death of his niece comes as a rude shock to him. But later on, he realizes that it was not a natural death, but died due to a careless shootout. He visits Hyderabad in search of the culprit who killed his niece. The rest of the story is all about how he accomplished it with the help of divine intervention and Neelima (Bhumika Chawla).

Artists Performance

Chiranjeevi: Chiranjeevi is in his elements again in this film by playing it to the galleries in comedy department. 70% of the scenes involving Chiranjeevi are dealt in humorous way. The way Chiranjeevi performs while kidnapping Sunil, making bakra out of Brahmanandam and church marriage scene is just perfect. His portrayal of affection towards his niece in flashback episode is also good. Dances performed are satisfactory.

Others: Sameera Reddy is the glamour doll of this film. She is nice and did Shakeera trademark dances. Bhumika Chawla who enters into the film in the second half plays a pivotal role. But her characterization is passive. Arbaz Khan is adequate as villain. Rahul Dev and Jaya Prakash Reddy are OK. Pingpong gave a commendable performance in an author-backed role of Rasool. Sunil is entertaining as innocent son of Jaya Prakash Reddy. Brahmanandam's episode in USA is nice. Tanikella Bharani as visa agent is hilarious. The child actress who did the role of niece is extremely cute. Venu Madhav is adequate.

Technical Departments:

Screenplay - direction: Vijaya Bhaskar is known for directing films that blend love, humor and sentiment in the right proportions. For the first time he has dealt with revenge story in this film. But the comedy in the film is given lot of footage. Screenplay should have been better. Though the comedy is entertaining, the purpose of the lead man taking revenge was not projected in an effective way. The divine intervention aspect and parallels to Ramayana are also not well established.

But his style of cooking up scenes laced with humor is intact. The following episodes in the film put you into splits

1. Ten Downing Street pub humor
2. Comedy episode in Delhi Public School
3. Sunil kidnap episode
4. Comedy of Marriage in Church
5. Brahmanandam in USA

The following episodes are impressive in terms of sentiment

1. Flashback episode
2. Hero caring for the girl suffering as child labor
3. Pingpong episode

The following films seem to have inspired certain scenes

1. Payback: Phone bomb planted by goons is being cleverly used by hero to assassinate them.
2. Fatal attraction: Boiling a puppy.

Story - dialogues: Story of the film is pretty strong one if emotions could be brought out in an effective way. Dialogues by Trivikram have his trademark punches and sensible humor. The way he makes lighter vein comedy out of seemingly general things is excellent.

Other departments: Music by Mani Sharma appears better on screen compared to listening on the audio tape. Cinematography by Venu (NVNV fame) is OK. Production values by Vyjayanthi banner are good.

Analysis: First half of the film is satisfactory with entertainment. There is lag in the second half. Sunil, marriage and Brahmanandam episodes are dealt well in the second half. Climax should have been handled better. The plus points of the film are Chiranjeevi and comedy dialogues by Trivikram. On the flipside, the main revenge objective of hero was not efficiently projected. We have to wait and see how Jai Chiranjeeva! fares at the box office

Story

JagadamSeenu (Ram), a child gets fascinated by a local rowdy Manikyam (Pradeep Rawat) and wants to be like him when he grows up. He makes his way into the Manikyam’s gang and soon becomes his confidant. Due to some unavoidable circumstances he walks out of Manikyam’s camp and forms a gang of his own. The rest of the story is all about whether he realizes the perils of being a Rowdy.

Artists Performance

Jagadam Ram: Ram is pretty good as the youngster fascinated by the profession of mafia. The variety steps he has done in the ‘violence is a fashion’ and ‘5 feet’ are very good. His performance in the climax scene is tremendous. There is lot of casualness in his Ram which suits the ‘Seenu gadu’ character the best.

JagadamIIsha: Heroine’s character needs to exhibit mischievous expressions and should have lots of spontaneity. The heroine character in this film is of sly nature that if not properly cast, the innocence and mischief of the character could turn into vulgarity. But unfortunately, she could not get it right in this film.

JagadamOthers: Pradeep Rawat is different in the role of the villain with a new get-up. Thankfully Sukumar has taken a decision not to show Pradeep Rawat again and again in ‘Sye’ type of get-up. AS Ravi Kumar Chowdary (director of Yagnam and Veerabhadra) did the role of villain’s sidekick. He is very good. Venu, who made debut as actor with ‘Jai’ film excels as sidekick of hero with terrific performance. The lean guy in hero’s gang is also very good. Raghubabu did the role of a meek father. This character is a different one for Raghubabu. Devi Charan did a vital role. Prakash Raj did the guest role of a police commissioner. Monalisa, Madhu Shalini and Zobyn Khan (sister of Mumaith Khan) did a couple of item songs in this film.

Technical Departments:

JagadamStory: Basic storyline of the film is pretty good. Story of the film seem to have drawn inspiration from Brazilian flick ’City of God’ (read jeevimovie.com review here). The violence aspect, how goons get excited by looking at the photos and news getting flashed in the media and indulging of kids in brutal activities are all there in City of God.

JagadamScreenplay - direction: Screenplay of the film is good, but seem to have become little contrived towards the end. Direction of the film is partly good. Taking is excellent. The director successfully narrated a thin storyline with nice visuals in the first half. But could not sustain momentum in the second half. Though the director could able to deal the action sequences well, he could not get the timing and zing right in romance thread. There are some impressive scenes like -

1. Hero’s first step of heroism in the scene where all the gang members step back and hero remains there.
2. The interval block.
3. The set-up for ‘Everybody’ song.
4. The scene in which police commissioner explains about the vicious circle

JagadamOther departments: Cinematography of the film is excellent. The graphic-work/color-grading is also good. Devi Sri Prasad excels again with this film in terms of songs and background music. Background music helped the narration of the film. Songs picturization of the film is also good. ‘Violence’, ‘5 feet’ and ‘Everybody’ are excellently choreographed. The set-up for ‘Muddante Cheda’ song reminds us of ‘Humma Humma’ from Mani Ratnam's Bombay. Artwork is good. Editing is neat. Fights are pretty good. Producer Aditya Babu should be commended for making such a brave attempt to do this film. The production values are extraordinary.

JagadamAnalysis: First half of the film is good. The tempo in second half goes down. The last twist of the film and the pre-climax episodes are bit unappealing. Director Sukumar selected a different subject and narrated it in his own style. But the main story point of the film is only revealed in the last 20 minutes. Hence the total orientation of the film takes U turn in the last 20 minutes. The plus points of the film are technical values and the first half. Director Sukumar should be commended for selecting a different theme. But the commercial success of the film depends on how the last 20 minutes appeal to the general moviegoer.

Tailpiece: There is one song in this film called ‘Voilence is a fashion”. But the makers have change it to ‘Jagadam is a fashion’ because censor board objected to the word 'voilence'. The censor members who don’t mind passing visuals of brutal bloodshed do seem to have a problem with the word ‘violence’.
